DO NOT REPLY [Bug 118583] New: on open chart Data Ranges, cells containing the name for each chart series are offset by -1 row

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=118583

             Bug #: 118583
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: on open chart Data Ranges, cells containing the name
for each chart series are offset by -1 row
    Classification: Application
           Product: Spreadsheet
           Version: OOo 3.3
          Platform: PC
        OS/Version: Windows XP
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: P5
         Component: ui
        AssignedTo: spreadsheet@openoffice.org
        ReportedBy: jdthomlinson@att.net
                CC: ooo-issues@incubator.apache.org

For Open Office Calc: OOO330m20 Build 9567

On opening (double-click on chart, right click select "Data Ranges..." from
drop down menu), the automatically selected cells containing the names for the
"Data series" are offset, by -1 row. This requires manually re-selecting each
"Range for Name" to select the correct cell. The column is correct.

The spreadsheet containing the data for the chart has ~2500 rows with columns A
- AB, the chart uses 6 data series.

I cannot intentionally reproduce this bug. However, it is very repeatable,
occurring ~15-20% of the times the chart is edited. And a PITA to reselect the
names. Makes me paranoid about writing a macro.

Data Ranges are offset by -1 for the rows only, columns are always correct.

The Data Range - Name cell is also offset by -1 row for all charts.

This is getting very irritating.
It's either a simple C problem with string pointers starting at 0 and not 1.
Or, perhaps more likely, the address is in a structure whose origin address is
varying between odd and even at "random" when loaded into memory. Need a PRAGMA
on the structure to insure a consistent starting address?

I realize that a bug that can't be forced is hard to fix. That doesn't mean it
doesn't exist and can be ignored. If no one wants to fix this - please, someone
point me to the appropriate source code and I will have a look myself. Thanks.

Unfortunately the spreadsheet is personal medical data.
The bug appeared yet again this morning when I opened Data Ranges to check
while writing the bug submission.
This is an old, 2yrs+ sheet about 1.5 MB in size, that is updated almost daily.
Format is native .ods.
The spreadsheet contains a number of simpler charts on separate sheets:
histogram, pie, scatter, etc. No problems there.
The chart giving me problems is an xy and is the most complex as it has 6
series.

I will try cloning the current spreadsheet and remove the other sheets/charts
and see if the problem is reproducible in the clone. If so, I can attach the
clone. Just need to find the time :(

I understand that if you folks can't reproduce it you can't fix it. But it is
definitely a bug as it has happened often enough, and the characteristics of
the defect remain identical. Thanks for the quick response.

Addition to previous comment. The pie charts 18-22 are _displayed_ correctly.
However, a double click on 18-22 changes the displayed chart to show that the
Data Range is indeed offset by -1. Each pie chart must be selected and the
Y-Value Data Range manually corrected.

Pie chart problem is more interesting. There are 22 pie charts in the sheet.
Only the first 17 charts failed to have the Data Range incremented. Charts 18
through 22 have the Data Range properly incremented.

(In reply to comment #1)
> I cannot see this behavior in a new created chart.

On another sheet in the same spreadsheet file I have a number of pie charts.
When inserting a row between the cells containing names for the range data
(first few rows of the sheet) and the pie charts below (pie chart anchor cells
are at least several rows below the inserted row), the addresses of the cells
containing the Y-Value ranges in each pie chart are not incremented. All the
pie charts must have their Data Range manually corrected. Inserting a second or
third row does not have any further effect.

Would a Process Explorer dump of the soffice fles at the time of the problem be
of assistance? Could you suggest any further experiments?

I cannot see this behavior in a new created chart.

Can you reproduce this with some charts or only with a specific one? If only
one, is it possible to attach the spreadsheet file to this issue? Eventually
after deleting all confidential data.
