Newbie trying to check-out to Mac: am I SOL?

Hi! Newbie (to the list) here. I'm trying to check-out, on a Mac using
the command line svn version 1.3.1, a project checked into our
repository using Windows TortoiseSVN wrapping Subversion 1.4.3. I'm
getting the following error:

subversion/libsvn_wc/questions.c:110: (apr_err=155021)
svn: This client is too old to work with working copy '.'; please get a
newer Subversion client

But 1.3.1 appears to be the latest (prebuilt binary) Mac version available:

http://subversion.tigris.org/project_packages.html ->
http://metissian.com/projects/macosx/subversion/

Short of building it myself from source, am I SOL?

Well I'm glad you got Subversion installed. If you would like to try
MacPorts again later, please come by the MacPorts Users mailing list
and I'm sure we can help you get it up and running.

I might be. :-)

I've been happy with Subversion installed via MacPorts for awhile
now. It's pretty easy:

1. Download the MacPorts 1.4.0 disk image from here:

http://svn.macosforge.org/repository/macports/downloads/MacPorts-1.4.0/

2. Set up your shell which is described here:

http://trac.macosforge.org/projects/macports/wiki/InstallingMacPorts

3. Update to the latest version:

sudo port selfupdate

4. Now you can install Subversion by typing:

sudo port install apr-util +no_bdb
sudo port install subversion +no_bdb

Lots of other software is available via MacPorts, so it may be worth
your while to set this up so that you can install other software easily.

1.3.x clients should be able to communicate with 1.4 servers just
fine. The error you're reporting isn't a server<->client issue, but
rather a purely client issue. The working copy you're using was
created or updated using a 1.4 client, and due to changes made to the
WC format in 1.4, it's incompatible with your 1.3 client.

Is your working copy perhaps shared with another person, or another OS?

I see Mark already answered the "how to get 1.4" question; I'm sure
Ryan S. will be along with pointers on other places you can get it as
well.

You can get 1.4 packages here:

http://www.codingmonkeys.de/mbo/

I do not understand why you are having a problem though. You should
only have a problem if you try to use the same working copy with a 1.3
and 1.4 client. The server version nor the version of anyone else's
client should not matter.

Sharing a working copy between a Mac and Windows computer is likely to
have other problems, such as line ending differences.
