How about the test suite? Over in Xalan, we think of all the flavors
of Xalan as part of the same (sub-)project because they have a test
suite in common. The tests depend on correct parsing, so parsing
gets tested as a byproduct of XSLT testing. Those projects which
implement W3C specs have the specs and associated conformance tests
as a common "code" base.
