Hi,

Unfortunately, I am not sure about such an issue.
Please ask David or someone who know that.

--

By the way, please take a look at
http://ws.apache.org/jaxme/

IIRC, Pluto is now under incubation, so i think it would be
better for you to put these lines:
"Pluto is an incubated subproject under the sponsorship of the Apache
Software Foundation's (ASF) Jakarta project. Incubation is required of
all newly accepted projects until a further review indicates that the
infrastructure, communications, and decision making process have
stabilized in a manner consistent with other successful ASF projects.
While incubation status is not necessarily a reflection of the
completeness or stability of the code, it does indicate that the project
has yet to be fully endorsed by the ASF."
at the top page (and disclaimer.html/ new page?).

What do you think? >> all

Hope this helps

Hi,

as I was not subscribed to the jetspeed list, I didn't saw
all the discussions about Pluto.
According to the original Pluto proposal on the wiki,
there should be some other/additional initial committers
(including myself). When will this happen?

Re: [Pluto]: how to add a portlet

Posted by "Glenn R. Golden" <gg...@umich.edu>.
I'll answer this - I'm not sure this is the best or only way, but it
works...

To add portlets to pluto's portal, edit:

PLUTO/war/WEB-INF/data/portletentityregistry.xml

Then edit:

PLUTO/war/WEB-INF/data/pageregistry.xml

To add them to the set of pages, etc, displayed.

If you modify these in the source area, you have to re-install pluto.
You can also edit them in the deployed webapp.

[Pluto]: how to add a portlet

Posted by "Glenn R. Golden" <gg...@umich.edu>.
I've checked out, built and installed Pluto, and the test portlet works.

I've created a .war with some sample portlets from Sun, and placed this
in the pluto/portlets directory.
When I install pluto, it picks that up, makes a webapp in tomcat for
it, and seems happy.

But when I visit pluto's portal in my browser at
localhost/pluto/portal, it just shows the "test" in the left menu...

So, if we add a portlet to pluto, how do we get to see it in pluto?

Thanks.

Re: [Pluto] basic architecture

The thing I like most about Avalon is the Framework - it lays out the
needs of a pluggable service environment very well, and it's rather
mature. I'm not committed to any of the Avalon container
implementations yet. That's why I think of it as a "cover" or API only.

I'll know more soon about how good it's model is, and about the modern
containers (fortress and merlin).

Yes I am open to it but
I tried using Avalon earlier this year for the service framework.
It was mostly deprecated without replacements.
Are you actively using Avalon now?
We need to discuss its benefits over Fulcrum or Hivemind or
PicoContainer. or ...

Are you open to considering just using Avalon framework as the standard
service API for JS2, and then using some Avalon container (Forest,
Merlin) or one we build ourself for the actual container impl? I don't
see why we need yet another cover, even if Pluto is using it. Let
Pluto do what it wants, but JS could use Avalon.

Jetspeed-2 provides a registry of all portlets in all web applications.
Unlike Jetspeed-1, the registry is stored entirely in the database.
You can access the registry with JMX.

CPS - Common Portlet Services is a light wrapper over Fulcrum.
We are currently discussing the best service framework to replace
Fulcrum.

[Pluto] basic architecture

Posted by "Glenn R. Golden" <gg...@umich.edu>.
This is my current understanding of a 168 Pluto based portal
implementation, I just want to see if I'm on a boat with any other
passengers here...

The whole thing (Portal, Portlets, Servlets, Jsp, etc) is running in a
Java Servlet/Jsp Web application server (i.e. Tomcat).

The entire Portal is one webapp. It has it's own folder under
tomcat/webapps, and the standard isolation from other webapps.

The Portlets that will be running in the portal are in one or more
other webapps. Sets of portlets live in a webapp, along with
(optionally) some servlets, jsp, static content, etc. There may be
many sets of portlets, each in a different webapp. Each with it's own
.war, folder under tomcat/webapps, isolation from other webapps, etc.

The Portal Administrator installs the portal webapp. She installs each
webapp of sets of portlets that will be available (probably via tools
in the portal). She informs the portal (somehow) of the existence of
these sets of portlets in these other webapps. Then she uses the
portal tools to configure the portal pages, etc.

Different webapp sets of portlets are running in their own class
loader, so jar versions and static classes are not in conflict between
them. Also, they cannot share static classes, such as common services
(such as provided by Pluto or Turbine or Avalon). As a request is
processed, and a servlet context request dispatcher is used to pass the
pen from one portlet to another to aggregate the response, the servlet
request *is* common, and anything placed in there (such as a service
manager) would be shared by all the portlets even across different
webapps. [I'm a little blurry on this whole point.]

Yes?

If I'm close here, then...

I wonder if there's a way for the Portal to query the "tomcat" to get
the list of available portlets, so that we can just drop in a (properly
prepared) .war and the portal knows it's there?

Is there a way to have a common Avalon-ish service framework among all
webapps, or are they kept separated?

Thanks.

yes the container, not the portal implementation
however we communicate with the container using the same interfaces

the pluto portal code exists under the source branch "src/portal"
the container is under "src/container" branch

this is the way that jetspeed-2 works today
one difference is that j2 uses one servlet to handle all portlets

[Pluto] the driver and the container

Posted by "Glenn R. Golden" <gg...@umich.edu>.
I'm starting to stare at Pluto. It's got it's little "driver" portal
in there as well as it's reference implementation of the 168 Portlet
Container. I'm trying to figure out which parts go where.

For Jetspeed, we will use just the container, not the driver, right?

Pluto wraps a servlet around each portlet that is deployed. More, it
lets sets of portlets be deployed in their own .war file forming their
own separate web application in Tomcat. Separate web applications have
separate servlet context, class loader, etc. This seems to be part of
the portlet spec, but I'm not sure.

Will Jetspeed do the wrapping of servlet around portlet and have each
portlet app br a separate web application like Pluto does?

Is this part of the throw away driver or the core container?

I think it may be a cool way to accomplish separate webapps for
portlets, but I'm still thinking about it...

Thanks.

- Glenn
