introducing the zz> shell

Hi

I've resolved STANBOL-312 and added the ssh accessible and scala based
clerezza shell to stanbol.

The bad news first: on my machine the additional bundles caused the jvm to
require more permsize than its default, so I hat to launch with the
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m vm option.

The ssh daemon is listening on port 8022 (this can of course be changed via
service property), to connect to it use:

ssh -p 8022 admin@localhost

the default pwd for the admin user is "admin"

Once connected you have a full scala console with access to the OSGi
service registry. To get an instance of a service you can use the
$[<className>] shortcut, for example:

zz>import org.apache.stanbol.enhancer.servicesapi._
zz>val jm = $[EnhancementJobManager]

jm now point to an EnhancementJobManager instance, you can use the tab key
to find the methods than can be invoked on an object:

zz>jm.
asInstanceOf enhanceContent getActiveEngines isInstanceOf
toString

I hope this is of use.

Hi Reto,

I have the zz-shell locally deactivated and must have forgot to redo
this change before committing the upgrade to Apache Http Components
4.2 in http://svn.apache.org/viewvc?view=revision&revision=1355715.

Sorry for that

Hi Rupert

You commented out the zz-shell with r1355715. As this is an unrelated issue
I assume thi happened by mistake. Is that correct?

Improving the docs and our website is on my list. I will work on
writing a usage scenario about creating custom launcher
configurations.

I think the 1GB were just chosen in the documentation to be safe
during development so that nobody can complain. This is not a number
that was chosen as a design goal and by this it confirms nothing.

I understand that the zz> shell is only part of the full launcher
right now? IMO memory is indeed not a problem for the full launcher as
it comes with all and everything that we have to offer. I would
suggest to not include the zz> shell in the stable launcher to make
the stable launcher more optimized for productive environments.

IMO the launchers that are provided by the community are just
examples. People, who really use parts of Stanbol in their products
should create their own launcher configurations anyway. Then they can
decide what is in there. It is good to have examples like the full
launcher that demonstrate what we have to offer.

The building and running instructions on the websie suggests 1 GB for
running. So I think this confirms that having a low memory footprint is not
a main goal of the full launcher, as long of course as there is no leak
that would affect stability.

I was not able to find a way to split up the PermGen usage
by package. One can only see about 10 different categories
that are not specific to bundles.

The increate of the PermGen is not specific to a specific category. So
using java VisualVM there seams to be no possibility to further inspect
what is causing this.

Regarding Heap:

The initial heap size of the full launcher is about 200MByte. During the
integration-tests the heap is stable by about 250MByte.
The max Heap size is set to 556 for the Integration test.

Similar here, but given that stanbol needs normally to be started (as per
the recomenation on the website) with 1g of heap space, what's the problem
with increasing PermGenSpace to 256Mb?

Did you happen to see which bundle uses such a lot of PermGenSpace?

Re: introducing the zz> shell

Posted by Rupert Westenthaler <ru...@gmail.com>.
Hi

I think this change causes current Jenkins build to fail during
integration tests with

ERROR: Bundle org.apache.felix.scr [181]: EventDispatcher: Error
during dispatch. (java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space)
java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space

Adding

>> > -XX:MaxPermSize=256m vm option.

to the jvm options of the integration tests solves that to me.
I will commit this change and see if it does make Jenkins happy again.

To further qualify the increase of the memory requirements regarding
this feature I ran the integration-test several times with and without
this features.

Results:

With the "zz> shell" bundle list included the average PermGen was about 220MByte
Without this feature PermGen was about 85MByte

Tested by using java VisualVM on Mac JVM 1.6.something.

Can someone else confirm those findings.

If other can confirm this results I suggest to keep this as an optional
feature that is not enabled by default.

WDYT

You can interactively play around with the exposed java api and the
available services. This can well be used in combination with a debugger
allowing to be more quickly at a breakpoint (by calling the service method
right away, skipping the web request).

No, it is by itself not a tool to modify existing code. You could write

in the console and making changes that are directly applied?
