[users@httpd] Permission denied: access to / denied
Getting a Permission denied error every time I try using my computer's
actual IP address instead of "localhost",e.g. Using Apache2 on RedHat8,
all firewalls turned off for testing purposes. It's actually Apache
denying permissions (according to error_log), and I've yet to figure out
why. Any input? Thanks in advance.

Yes, he quoted the wrong person :-) Using a different doc root than the
default one.
As for the error_log, here goes:
[error] [client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to / denied
Don't get this error if I use "localhost" instead of my computer's
actual IP though.

You quoted the wrong person :-) I was just giving an example of how to find
out what it was trying to serve, not an example of what it should say.

yup yup, that's the next step in the plan if he doesn't have an easily
spotted config problem.

Weren't you using RedHat 8? The default webroot is /var/www/html and
config in /etc/httpd/conf/
You can also increase the log level if you need more details on what
went wrong.

No. httpd-*.zip contains only the base apache modules. mod_perl, php,
etc are distributed separately. Getting those all integrated into the
windows build is probably not an easy task. That is why most people
stick with binaries for windows.

RE: [users@httpd] Apache Configuration....

Hello
I`m not a rewrite module expert but something like this would work (as
long as you have mod_rewrite installed and a cgi-bin set up):
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www\.foo\.com
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !/cgi-bin/foo1\.exe
RewriteRule /.* http://www.foo.com/cgi-bin/foo1.exe [L,R]
You could also throw away the first RewriteCond if you wanted it to
apply to all requests not depending on what host it was made too...
should work I think :)
Regards,
Amadej.

[users@httpd] Apache Configuration....
Posted by "mail.earthlink.net" <be...@earthlink.net>.
Hi...
Is there an easy/simple way to configure Apache to force every/any request
to the root to a specific CGI app in a given folder/directory?
IE: www.foo.com would actually be redirected, causing f:\test\foo1.exe to be
run.
Thanks

Hi...
Fogive me on this one!! For some reason, I'm currently not able to download
the apache windows src (httpd-2.0.43-win32-src.zip). However, I wanted to
know if the source contains everything that I would need to create apache
and all the underlying mods, including mod_perl??? If it doesn't, does
anyone know of some doc that describes what's required to create the
necessary files. I've downloaded the binaries, so I have everything working.
I'd like to know how to recreate from source if I needed to.
Thanks...

Look at the error message, and make sure the directory it is trying to serve
is what you mean for it to serve.
you should see a line like in error_log:
[Wed Oct 23 17:31:01 2002] [error] [client 255.255.255.255] client denied by
server configuration: /usr/local/apache/htdocs
Are you meaning to serve up /usr/local/apache/htdocs?
Are there any sort of configuration settings for allow/denying access?
Anything in a .htaccess?

Not using Virtual Hosts, Listen is set to "80" only.

Are you using virtual hosts or Listen 127.0.0.1:80? Once you define a
virtual host, the global directory becomes moot, and you'll have to add an
entry for localhost/127.0.0.1.

check your document root in your http.conf.
I had same error and the cause was a typo in the docroot.
