-1.  Export and import restrictions in some countries require that it be
     disabled by default.

By the way, it still won't compile without openssl, but that's what
I'm working on right now -- conditional compilation of the ssl
routines.

It was already enabled by default (or another way to look at it was that
it wouldn't compile w/o it). I went back and forth on this, so it's no
big deal to switch the default to disabled.
