tracking growth of repositories

I was wondering if anyone tracks/graphs the growth of their
repositories.  I have thought of many ways to do it, but as I reinvent
the wheel, how do others handle this?  Sql, rrdtool, something else?

I was thinking of something similar.  

I run a hotcopy each night and send myself an email regarding the rev
number and repo size.  

In addition to sending the email, recording the size and rev into an rrd
sounds promising, but I'm not sure this is ideal for rrdtool, as the
numbers should be exact, and not smoothed over time.  

This lead me to wonder if I am re-inventing the wheel.
