Huge .TBL files in distribution

I find that, in terms of megabytes, fully 20% of the Lenya 1.2.4
source download is due to .TBL files.  What are these for?  A little
googling seems to indicate they are Xindice database tables, and they
come as part of Cocoon. Are they actually used by Lenya for anything?
