   The MQTT client in tree today, net/mqtt/eclipse (Paho embedded-c), is effectively dormant. 
   
   Instead I suggest using coreMQTT client from FreeRTOS: is has acceptable licence (MIT), is actively develop and embbeded friendly (no malloc, no threads etc).
   
   coreMQTT is pulled in as an external repository. The Mynewt-specific part is small:
   - syscfg-based config
   - modlog logging
   - a blocking mn_socket transport, so the API can be called from a regular task
   
   Because the transport goes through mn_socket, it works with any socket backend we have.
   
   One note: this only supports MQTT 5.0 but I think this is acceptable limitation.
