Solved my own problem. Even though I was convinced my .htaccess files 
did not trigger DNS lookups, I went through them all one by one and sure 
enough I found a line I had added some time ago (which I had completely 
forgot about) which denied access to a domainname instead of an 
ip-address (to stop some leecher).

I removed that line and all is fine again.

My apologies for wasting your time (and mailbox space). :(
