As of [https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/10203,] the release tarball no longer includes includes test, sources, javadoc and test sources jars. These are still published to the Maven Central repository.

This seems like a good change and 3.0.0 would be a good time to do it, but filing this JIRA to follow up and make sure before said release.
