[Proposal] Switch to SVN
I propose that we switch the Incubator repository to SVN.
Aditionally, I wanted to see what others think in making SVN a
requirement for all new podlings entering the Incubator. IT would
certainly make it easier to keep track of permissions across all
Incubator-dependant repositories.

As with all of the other messages I've seen so far, I agree with switching
the incubator CVS module to SVN, and making Subversion a strong
recommendation, but not a requirement, for projects.

- -1 as a requirement, +1 as a strong recommendation, +1 as an
even stronger recommendation that it be put on the graduation
goals list for each podling. but not a requirement.

I find the command-line tools to be totally adequate.

SVN seems to be easier than CVS.

I definitely wasn't referring to the SVN *server*, which I would surely
enjoy. I am talking about tools and integration.

Oh, SpamAssassin is not in the incubator any more, but boy, SVN is MUCH
MUCH better than CVS. I highly recommend it.
When Subversion 1.1 comes out, as far as I can tell, it will be superior
to CVS in every way. 1.1 fixes my two major complaints: "svn blame" was
really slow and diff now follows across renames (before, you had to
specify both full names which is a pain). Even without 1.1, it's crazy
to not be being moving any project to SVN as fast as possible. Of
course, if SVN does not do something you must have, then wait, but
otherwise just do it. It's that nice.

I still do believe, that SVN isn't sufficiently well supported. That
doesn't apply to the SVN server, but to the tools, IDE's, and similar
thing. For example, the Eclipse plugin for SVN is way behind the CVS plugin.
It is quite reasonable, that this will change over the next year. But,
as the situation is now, I would consider it a pain to use SVN in
everydays work. That is also the reason, where I do not support
switching to SVN in the Apache projects, I am involved in.
Conclusion: Give it another year.
And, just a personal feeling: I would consider it expecting too much
from a podling, to fulfill requirements, that not even the major Apache
projects fulfill.
