[jira] Updated: (QPID-53) Create Project Logo

Robert Gemmell updated QPID-53:
-------------------------------

    Attachment: qpid_logo_medium.png
                qpid_logo_small.png

I thought number 3 was being a bit let down by its colour scheme, so what better way to inject some... :)

I will try that out tomorrow, im out of time today and wont be home until morning.

Alternatively, im not sure what the Red Hat geography is like but if Gordon is nearby it might be easier for you to pick the colour in person, and he seems to know something about selection that I don’t (like how to deal with the aliasing when changing the colours?).

I like the two tone. trying slate blue might be worth it.

I have asked an artist that sits close to me to create one with Qpid ->
where the -> a bow and arrow, the arrow being the
apache feather for fun. I'm mail it out once I have it.

Yes, thats what I liked. The feather adds some colour, some interest
(and ties in with Apache) while overall the logo is not too 'busy'.

I often draw little symbols like that for threads or processes pulling
things off queues, so I don't have any negative associations; however I
suspect I'd be equally happy with many other 'Q's.

I wasnt quite sure how to use a double arrow other than in 7/8 below (or
even if that's the type of double arrow you meant) ...but here are some more
alternatives.

My artistic abilities are fairly tapped out at this point, so I think it's
over to Carl's actual artist after this hehe :)

Maybe something with a double arrow?

Symbolic logos do get interpreted by many people (that's the social
science talking). It's important to pick something that won't be
negatively interpreted. I'm not sure request/reply is a bad symbolism
though.

Having said that, symbolic logos aren't bad. They're good because
they're highly distinctive, and help build brand awareness. I would
quite like to be able to get merch/tat with a Qpid Q on it and have
people just know that it's Qpid. Obviously this only applies to a
certain subset of people.

Maybe something with a double arrow?

Not sure if im the only one but i dont particularly ever try to
interpret logos, I just go by what looks nice not whether its trying to
represent hehe (out of interest, anyone know what the Apache feather is
all about anyway? :P I have no idea, but i think its nice hehe)...

I didnt like any of the Q's in particular, but id probably say its nicer
than some of the others now. I tried playing around with the feather on
the Q but it didnt do anything for me...theres just somthing about Q, it
never really looks nice :)

Certainly not an area i know anything about either, and wasnt something
id have any real control over without starting from scratch....i just
chose to play around with the 3rd example logo because i thought it was
getting the short end of the stick with its lack of colour :)

Another fairly geeky interpretation would be that it is reminiscent of a
circular data structure like a circular buffer or a circular queue.

I do think the font choice could use some improvement, not that I know
enough about fonts to make a better suggestion.

In general though I think this direction for the logo has a lot of promise.

Hi guys,

My non-voting comment. Thanks for letting me weigh in :)

I like that it is clean. I like the feather.

I'm not fond of the 'Q'. It reminds me of a request-reply call - the arrow goes out and comes back.

I preferred the 'Q' that was much more flowing - like a smooth message flow.

But perhaps you have already gone over why this 'Q' makes more sense and I missed that. Or perhaps the new found fondness of the feather has taken our eyes of the 'Q' ?

Best,
William

I did actually try the all-black thing originally as well, but something about the alternating scheme caught my eye. I was thinking about adding 'Apache' to it at the time and I think the idea of all that black put me off...as a standalone Qpid it does work quite nicely though, should have finished it :P

I tried closing the gap on the Q but it was my first time using Paint.net and I wasn’t able to come up with anything that good hehe, so in the end I settled for the feather and moving the letters closer together :)

I don’t particularly like any of the Q's (though that one would look nicer with a smaller/no gap at the bottom I think) so I didn’t bother trying it with different versions.

I just figured that of the few designs that don’t have any real colour, 3 is the nicest and definitely worth considering, but not as it stood :)

Now, it appears to be nearing time to get up, so I think ill go to bed :)

    Attachment: qpid_logo_medium.png
                qpid_logo_small.png
