[users@httpd] mod_vhost_alias and DNS(?) question

Hello,

Just setting up a new server and I thought I'd give mod_vhost_alias a
swing. The problem that I'm running in to is that of having to deal
with both hostname.org and www.hostname.org.

I have it configured to use %0 in the file path, and I would prefer to
keep all three parts of the name to allow for subdomains if needed.
Basically, I don't know if this is a DNS issue (I don't think so), an
apache issue, or?

Is there a way to force hostname.org -> www.hostname.org short of using
mod_rewrite? If not, anyone have an easy, functional example?

I thought of using the third part of the hostname as part of the
directory structure to allow users easy access to subdomains, and then
just symlinking the www to the main dir (or not). Attempts to get this
to work have thus far been unsuccessful.

Any ideas, tips, pointers, etc would be greatly appreciated.

This is apache 1.3.27 for the record (RH 7.3 RPM).

Thanks,

SS
