{{The org.apache.geode.cache.query.IndexType ENUM type has been deprecated without a clear replacement. This causes some issues with warnings during compilation and a lack of clarity on how to properly use the code.}}

A [proposal|https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=135863477] was written up and discussed to address this. 

This issue is opened to implement the proposal.
