Waht is the dependency list for fop

Hello, i am integrating fop inside a web appilcation.
However, while testing it embeded, i run into classnotfud exception.
After a bit of searching , i found i had to integrate avalon-framework-4.1.5
library in project. Yes i know it is stated your loggin depends on avalon,
but there is a bunch of avalon related libraries under the ibiblio maven
repository and tok several try to find the good one.
Now am facing the same problem with batik dependency. Unfortunately, batik is
exploded in countless packages and i doubt i need all of them.

So my question is,
is there a list of the dependencies in the form 'name of library, version' so
i don't put too much libraries inside my application and i don't miss
important ones?

For now am walking blindly in the darkness, reacting to every class not found
exception on a seek the jar and add it basis.

As fop is available as a maven library, this would be a good idea to add some
explanations on it's dependecies somewhere, or at least put a pom.

Thanks

FOP doesn't care about the JAXP implementation, just make one available.
But this comment might not hold for Batik which still has an explicit
dependency on Xerces.

better use the latest version 4.2.0. It's fully backwards-compatible.

2 comments:
- the batik.jar delivered with FOP is more or less what is generated
using the "ant all-jar" command which contains the classes of all these
little JARs.
- Not only awt-util relies on AWT but the whole thing. There's no way
around this dependency right now. Maybe we'll do something for the next
release but then you loose SVG capability.

I wouldn't say that. The Avalon project failed because of community
problems. The Avalon Framework we use is still maintained, but now by
the Excalibur team:
http://excalibur.apache.org/
http://www.apache.org/dist/excalibur/avalon-framework/binaries/

No, we're not responsible for what's in ibiblio.org or what's available
through Maven. As Chris said, you should go to the Maven people.
Somebody obviously needed FOP and Batik in the Maven repository and put
them there. It wasn't us.

Yes, indeed am speaking about maven distribution

Some simply do not exist with such names ;)

However, after a bit of tries, i found a maven dependencies list fitting the
needs. I send it to mailing list, just in case some people need it in the
future:

xalan-2.6.0 (as distribution comes with 2.4.1 i guess most version of xalan
works)
xercesImpl-2.6.2 (same notice as for xalan apply)
xml-apis-1.2.01
avalon-framework-4.1.3 (created 12 october 2002, nearest to the cvs-20020806)
batik-util-1.5
batik-svg-dom-1.5
batik-bridge-1.5
batik-gvt-1.5
batik-awt-util-1.5 (i don't like the idea of an awt dependency inside a
servlet but it's still definitly better than no pdf production at all :)

> and use the JARs in the FOP lib sub folder.

Quite of problematic on a big project to use jar bundled with distribution.
Some other libs might also depend on xerces for example. Concerning xalan,
xercesImpl and xml api, they are quite commonly shared by lots of library,
but thanks god they are stable enough so the already used lib in our projet
were fine. Anyway it definitly do no good to put several versions of the same
class comming from different jars bundled with distribution. That's wahy is
was enquiring for dependecy list, and that's why we use maven here to manage
our dependencies.
Concerning avalon, well... A quick tour on their web site and you understand
it won't be a dependency to a lot of projects for long ;)

Isn't the fop team responsible for the upload of the fop jar on ibiblio.org?
That's what i assumed. Anyway, the maven team only make the maven tool, up to
projects to create their maven distribution. If it's not the fop team which
distributed fop 0.20.5 in the maven ibiblio directory, i wonder who it is!

I believe that the FOP 2.20.5 expects to use the batik.jar included with the FOP distribution, because the interface to batik is not really all that stable.

Anyway, that is what the FOP web site says.

No. Internal fop development only.

You must be talking about the maven distribution. I am talking about the FOP
distribution. The FOP distribution has the following JARs in the lib sub folder:

batik.jar
avalon-framework-cvs-20020806.jar
xalan-2.4.1.jar
xercesImpl-2.2.1.jar
xml-apis.jar
fop.jar

However, it will do you no good looking for JARs with the same name in maven
or any other product because the contents of the JARs might be different. If
you want to use FOP 0.20.5 then download the FOP distribution and use the JARs
in the FOP lib sub folder. If FOP is broken within maven, because it doesnt
have all the dependencies then I suggest you report the problem on the maven
Mailing list.

By the way, list of jar in lib is not really explicit. There is a batik.jar

(batik-awt, batik-bridge, batik-css, batik-gvt, and so on)

I post this on -user too. to be in good mailing list

If you download the FOP binary distribution, you will see all the required JAR
files in the lib sub folder. The FOP.bat used to run FOP from command line
also lists the JAR files required.

BTW, this sort of question is best asked on the fop-user list. fop-dev is for
programming issues inside FOP.
