There was a security notice that was sent to all PMCs about a month ago. The cgi is no longer to be used.

Oh, it didn't look that way from the description I've seen. Thanks a
lot!

I've manually added the generated HTML files and re-created the website:

     http://people.apache.org/~bodewig/log4net/site/

now contains HTML pages for the SDK reference.

Sandcastle (I suggest using it via the "Sandcastle Help File Builder [1])
does
fine in creating static html output. You just get an *additional*
index.asp and
index.php that provies full-text search, if your server supports it.

Just to state the obvious, we can always change the site independent of
any releases.

If you know of any tool that creates static HTML documentation, then we
I'll be happy zo run it once manually to update the site and figure out
how to add it to the build process later.

For XMLUnit.NET I've switched to monodoc but it took some time to get it
set up correctly. AFAICT Sandcastle only supports ASP.NET pages.

Start by telling me which pages you are talking about ;-)

I haven't seen any pages with missing menu items (or rather strange
indents) so far. It may depend on the browser, though.

License and everything underneath Community seems to open up the tree
hidden under "Project Documentation" - to me it behaves exactly like the
current site does.

I forgot to mention it, sorry. ndoc has finally reached the point where
it doesn't work for out codebase anymore, it just dies with a
NullReferenceException. I've created the docs with Sandcastle, but this
one hasn't got any option of creating static HTML files. as far as I can

The website has the following issues:

* Sdk reference is a chm file, no longer a http website
* several pages have missing menu items in the project documentation section
* on sites where the missing project documentations are shown, they are
displayed with an indent and the menu therefore looks awkward
* the download page links to a cgi website, does that still work? From
memory infra disabled cgi scripts, didnt they?

I'll try to look at the binaries later, but for now these things must be
fixed before we release it.

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache log4net 1.2.14 based on RC1

Posted by Dominik Psenner <dp...@gmail.com>.

Forget all the Visual Studio stuff and go to "NAnt". You should use
NAnt 0.92, 0.91 will be fine for Windows as well.

If you'd like to validate all DLLs, then you are in for a hunt and very
likely need an MSDN subscription to get hold of ancient versions of .NET
- so don't even try to do that. Buiding the relase involved combining
artifacts built on four different machines (for really old Mono, XP -
non networked - for really old .NET, recent Mono and recent .NETs).

If you've got access to a recent Windows system and a recent .NET SDK,
you'll likely only manage to build the .NET 4.0 and 4.5 assemblies.
Likewise on a recent Linux distro with recent Mono packages you'll only
receive the mono-3.5 and mono-4.0 binaries.

Cheers

Well, I haven't seen any formal vote at all, and even counting my own
implicit one, this isn't enough.

The concerns raised against the site have been addressed, I hope, I've
updated the site for

     http://people.apache.org/~bodewig/log4net/site/

Since I'll be traveling the coming two days I'll leave this vote open
for another three days until 24 Oct - and hope people have time to
review the artifacts themselves.

While only votes by PMC members are binding, testing by anybody is more
than welcome. The assemblies are available from

     https://dist.apache.org/repos/dist/dev/logging/log4net/

Cheers

Given that it takes several hours to build an RC I won't be able to do
so before the coming weekend. I'll try to cut free some time then.

They are default pages generated by Maven - and TBH I don't have any
idea how to customize them. Personally I'd just öeave them alone.

There were a few things I wanted to be fixed and I'm finished with doing so
right now. Should we start another release vote if the next jenkins build
is ok? Despite that I've another question regarding the website. As
mentioned before the menu on the pages:

* https://logging.apache.org/log4net/mail-lists.html
* https://logging.apache.org/log4net/issue-tracking.html

is different from the other pages. But looking at the site source
(svn/src/site/**) I'm unable to even find a trace of these two pages. How
are they generated? We surely can't fix those two pages manually every time
we do a release?

I don't expect to attract more votes with a new candidate since all
remarks so far have been related to the site and not the artifacts

Re: [VOTE] Release Apache log4net 1.2.14 based on RC1

Posted by Dominik Psenner <dp...@gmail.com>.
Hi guys,

Thanks for your patience and thanks for the efforts you put into this to
get another release out of the door!

So far I've re-checked the website and it looks better now. The SDK
reference looks different now but that doesn't bother me. The old format
had some broken encoding and the current SDK reference is a improvement
from that point of view. However, there are a few things that might be
worth fixing. The following lists these ordered by priority+effort:

* In the SDK reference have some images gone missing or look odd:
 ** Item.gif
 ** SyncTOC.gif
 ** ExpandAll.bmp
 ** CollapseAll.bmp
* Clicking on Community/Issue Tracking or Community/Mailing List brings up
http://people.apache.org/~bodewig/log4net/site/issue-tracking.html,
respectively
http://people.apache.org/~bodewig/log4net/site/issue-tracking.html. On both
of these sites new menu items appear under Project Documentation:

   - Continuous Integration
   <http://people.apache.org/%7Ebodewig/log4net/site/integration.html>
   - Source Repository
   <http://people.apache.org/%7Ebodewig/log4net/site/source-repository.html>
   - Project License
   <http://people.apache.org/%7Ebodewig/log4net/site/license.html>
   - Project Team
   <http://people.apache.org/%7Ebodewig/log4net/site/team-list.html>
   - *Issue Tracking*
   - Mailing Lists
   <http://people.apache.org/%7Ebodewig/log4net/site/mail-lists.html>

These items have a different indentation and both "Issue tracking" and
"Mailing Lists" is also listed under "Community".

Please note that both of these are not blockers and definitely just nice to
haves. The rest of the website looks just great! Good work! For now I'll go
to bed. But if all goes according to my plans, tomorrow evening I'll take a
look at the binaries. I won't check the issue tracker if there are issues
worth to be fixed as I will not have the time to fix them.

To everyone out there who has patches ready, please bring them forth within
the next 24 hours and I will take a look at them. I would prefer a patch
sent to log4net-dev, but attaching it to a JIRA issue is fine by me too.
The only must have is that the patch must apply safely to the current trunk
and should be easily code-reviewable / tested with unit tests.

Good night and read you soon
