I am out of town at the moment. In the future, I would appreciate it if you would direct all poi related questions like this to the dev list. 

Open source is different than what you are used to. Some people in the past have asked me to spoon feed them tasks like a project manager might at a company. I do not have time to do this. It is up to you to have to find tasks that need doing. I will point you in the right direction and I am happy to answer questions.

I am excited that somebody wants to help :-), I just want to make it clear how this all works. Some people were under the wrong impression in the past.

I guess what you could do is start adding more functionality to the user model. look in the hwpf.usermodel package. I posted an example to the dev list about a month ago.

I however, do have time to help (granted nto a lot because most people who
ask never reply back).  See if you can implement R/W support for tables in
word.  Also we're a bit lax on unit tests for HWPF.
