Slack, perhaps?

Is there any interest in having a Thrift channel in ASF's Slack instance?
It could be useful for extemporaneous chat, mentoring, onboarding, and
quick user questions for Thrift.

I could create a Thrift channel for the community. I just don't want
to be the only one lurking in there.

I know some projects might still be using IRC... I don't know if
that's the case for Thrift or not, but more and more people seem to be
using Slack these days. Even if IRC is used, it's probably a good idea
to have a presence in Slack (since it's available to us) anyway.

Per the wiki [1] it's possible invite non-apache users.

@XU Qinghui: I've requested an invite for you for the #thrift channel. This might be unnecessary though, as other ASF projects [2] encourage people to signup directly via this link [3]. You can try to signup from there as well.

Don't know. The old one was. However, not very crowded anyway.

For somebody that don't have an apache email address, is it possible to use
it?

I think there’s only one Slack (the ASF one) with a #thrift channel?

At least that’s my understanding. Apologies if I got that incorrect.

Thanks Christopher, I think it's a great idea. It's certainly better than
IRC and mailing lists for attracting new contributors.

I went ahead and created the channel (#thrift). I'll also add a link to it

Everyone, feel free to join and participate as much (or as little) as you
