Questions...
1. Do you envision the "news feed" having anything other than component release info?
2. Would this need to be manually updated?
Comments...
1. It's not clear to me why specifically this is needed. Direct links to both Classic and Artemis releases are available just a bit further down the page, and NMS and CMS release links are very clearly visible on their respective component pages. The bit summarizing the contents of the release (i.e. bugs, dependencies, & enhancements) is nice. Perhaps we should just add those details to the existing release pages.
2. In terms of screen real-estate and attention, this is a pretty significant change to the main page. I'm not sure it makes sense for this news feed to occupy such a prominent position. Maybe a new top-level "News" menu item should be added and all these details could go there.

I like it, it's clear and straight to get latest release/news. At Karaf, we are using a "carousel", maybe we can use the same later.

This looks to be entirely manual in terms of update. Whatever is done should use templated/generated updates like the rest of the 5.x and Artemis release process updates have now been made to be.
If adding such a large (vertically) feed, which itself seems somewhat unnecessary, I think the banner above it should be reduced, say by decreasing the size of the logo within it. Either seems overly large on their own and combined they then take up way too much space I think.
How many bugs/dependencies/enhancements doesnt seem particularly important to be key detail needing reported here. How many there are is far less important than _what_ they actually are. I would ditch that entirely (leaving the title, the date, and link) which would likely sort the size issue, and make it more easily templated (being similar to existing use of such detail).

Its funny that you mentioned the Karaf carousal. I actually quite disliked how it is used when I came across it in recent weeks. With it potentially listing many _older_ releases, it can easily end up pulling you towards them instead of the current one. It got in the way more than it helped.
If you don't happen to be looking at the carousel immediately, before it starts rotating, but then do look later (e.g tab away and then return) you don't necessarily know or notice you aren't currently looking at the newest release entry for that component. Something you cant tell without then first looking at all the previous entries. So you can easily end up being pulled toward an older release details instead of the current.
(Looking at it again now, I now also see that it has more entries than there are 'indicators' underneath..when it goes past the last one you then dont even have that prompt you arent looking at the newest entry).
