SyntaxHighlighting

For a while I"ve been trying to understand the methodology behind syntax
highlighting and one of the things I've foudn that go hand in hand it seems
is regexp. Now with this package for java released, I'm very confused
exactly HOW I would utilize it to perform syntax highlighting.

Can anyone provide links or infromation on how this works? Thanks!
