[ANNOUNCEMENT] Struts 1.1 Release Candidate 2 released

The Struts team is proud to announce the release of Struts 1.1 Release
Candidate 2. This release includes some new functionality, but mostly just
fixes for a number of bugs which were reported against earlier versions.
The Struts Team believes that this release is ready for prime time, hence
its designation as a release candidate.

The binary distribution is available at:

http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/struts/binaries/

and the source distribution is available at:

http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/struts/source/

In addition, the library distribution, which contains updated binaries
without the sample applications, is available at:

http://www.apache.org/dist/jakarta/struts/library/

Details of the changes in this release are available in the Release Notes,
which can be found here:

http://jakarta.apache.org/struts/userGuide/release-notes-1.1-rc2.html

Special thanks to Ted Husted for his help in preparing this release.

Congratulations to Gemes Tibor and Ed Robbins, who both submitted the
correct title, The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. LeGuin. (Given the
book, it's only appropriate that we have two winners!)

And, if anyone is wondering, Ms. LeGuin has been known to enjoy a good
cigar from time to time =:0)

To all those who suggested Dr Freud, I apologize for not being clear.

The cigar quote is a clue as to the identity of the science fiction
author who wrote a book in which the first quote appeared: "Sometimes a
step backward is a step in the right direction."

Here's the second clue as to the book. (Since this one is actually from
the book, I'm less likely to confuse anyone this time.)

"The mother of several children may be the father of several more."

If no one gets this now, then I'm *really* dating myself (so to speak). =:0)

OK, here's the first clue, as to the author:

"Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar."

And, in this case, I'll accept the author as well as the title.

I have read your book and many other tips. But I definitely miss the
signature cause what I found is

"Two steps backward are a big step forward sometimes."

As many of you know, one of the stepping stones in getting RC2 out was
falling back to the 1.02 implementation of the GenericDataSource.

Which brings to mind a quote from another of my favorite science
fiction novels:

"Sometimes a step backward is step in the right direction."

A signed copy of Struts in Action to person who identifies the book or
author by emailing me *directly* at < husted@apache.org >.

This may be a hard one, so I may have to post some clues later =:0)

Thanks for doing this, Ted, that's great.

FileUpload went out last night (or rather early this morning ;), so now
we have all of our Commons ducks in a row. Yahoo! (Can I say that, or is
it trademarked? :)

Just want to be clear, so that nothing falls on the floor by accident. ;-)

I'll do the Release Manager thing. Do you want me to do the plan and vote,
or are you going to finish that up? I don't mind doing it, but I haven't
started on it yet, and likely won't until I've finished with getting the
FileUpload release out the door.

Just let me know which way you'd like to go.

I'll be looking at the float validation bug tonight. Ted thinks it's in
commons-validator but I'm not convinced yet. Other than that, there's
only the nested tag issue left. I think we're ready!

Yep. The release itself is built, I just need to get it out. That should
happen this evening.

I think we might have just a few happy customers at that time. ;-)

I was just thinking about pushing out the release plan myself, but if
you're already on it, great! It looks like I'll have time to do the
release itself this weekend, assuming we're ready.

Just a note on the RC2 status.

Martin posted the release vote for FileUpload on Monday, and there
are already 3 binding +1s. <yeah!/>

We've one outstanding Bugzilla ticket against RC2, which we should be
able to either resolve or postpone. Given the imminent release of FU
1.0, I plan to post the Struts 1.1 Final Release vote tomorrow, so that
we can roll it out on June 29. <double-yeah!/>
