[D] Alternative to MySQL [cloudstack]

GitHub user chunkyen created a discussion: Alternative to MySQL

Looks like it is all Doom and Gloom for MySQL [https://www.theregister.com/2026/01/23/mysql_post_oracle/](https://www.theregister.com/2026/01/23/mysql_post_oracle/).
All my testing has been done with MySQL. So does the community recommends using MariaDB as Cloudstack datastore? Any pitfalls to look out for?

Perconas Cluster is called PXC Cluster, Percona XtraDB Cluster. Traditionally Percona adds their own secret sauce, its a MySQL consulting company. I would see it the same way as MariaDB. You can buy commercial support, but the software itself is free.

Around a year ago, MariaDB acquired Galera (Codership), making Percona unnecessary now. The official SST methods for Galera are now rsync and mariabackup. Mariabackup allows the donor to remain available during the SST process.
Postgres would only be helpful in multi-region configurations where there are multiple replicas operating across various geographic locations. This is dicciful to achieve with Galera, as It could significantly slow down database writes.

@bradh352
Just saw this. This is an issue caused by a change in MariaDB 11.6, which PR #13962 is trying to fix.

I proposed a similar workaround to yours in the comment: https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/13962#issuecomment-5408756982

If you're on a MySQL version prior to v8, you can just uninstall mysql and install MariaDB and run the standard mysql_upgrade (err, mariadb_upgrade) command.

But if you're on version 8, you have to do a full dump / reload due to incompatible on-disk formats. I haven't gone through this process for cloudstack, but assuming your database isn't too large its not a big deal.

I've been running mariadb (with galera cluster) in production for a while now without issue (after banging my head against the wall with failures for a bit).

The main configuration that solved everything for me was:
```
character-set-server           = utf8mb4
collation-server               = utf8mb4_general_ci
character_set_collations='utf8mb4=utf8mb4_general_ci'
skip-character-set-client-handshake
```

I've never had to tweak character sets and collations before for any app, I'm guessing it has something to do with some schema settings that cloudstack sets. I didn't look deep into the cloudstack side to see if there would be any schema tweaks that would be less dependent on server-side settings. The current recommended collation is `utf8mb4_uca1400_ai_ci` for mariadb, but that doesn't work.

Maybe that version was less strict or defaulted to something closer to mysql. Its still an LTS release that's got a couple of years left on it so if it works well, its a good option.

Realistically someone should probably test all 3 MariaDB LTS versions that are still supported (10.11, 11.4, 11.8) and document compatibility and possibly required configuration changes for those versions.

After experimenting with different setups, I decided against replicating between two distinct clusters. Instead, I'm stretching the Galera cluster by putting two nodes at each location and a single node at a third site that will run the arbitrator.
I've also enabled the `gmcast` settings, which allow splitting the cluster in multiple segments, so commits are relayed by one host at time and are propagated in the local site.
Without this parameter, one host sends to all, and it means crossing the WAN twice instead of just once.
The GTID replication kept generating errors. Also, MaxScale geo-replication is not free and is only in technology preview.
**I really wish I could have used Postgres with Patroni! It would have very effective.** __
Alongside Galera and keeplived I am also using `etcd` with keys generated by a systemd service to prevent split-brain scenarios. This functionality would have been available by default with Patroni.
So, plus one for Postgres supports 👍.

I am currently working to implement this database architecture. It consists of two Galera clusters, replicating through signal18/replication-manager.
There will be a primary cluster and HAProxy points to that one.

I'd get random failures clicking through the UI all about collation issues. That was months ago on Cloudstack 4.20 I think. Its always been MariaDB 11.4 though.

Guess I should ask what version of MariaDB you're running...

if you need a cross-region cluster, yeah, things get way more complicated unless your regions are fairly close.

I've run datacenters before within 20 or so ms of eachother (stable dedicated links like wavelengths, not public internet) with a stretched galera with success, mostly because of the opportunistic certification ... but I didn't explicitly try that with cloudstack.
