Draft Introduction to Marketing modules

I'm not sure if I ever mentioned this on the marketing list, but I've
been working on some "new volunteer" orientation modules, essentially
webpages that we can point new volunteers to, so they can get up to
speed on the project.

Some of the modules are generic, dealing with basic things like how
the project is organized and how decision making at Apache works. You
can see these as Level 1 and Level 2 modules here:

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/orientation/index.html

And then there are more specialized ones for specific project areas,
like QA, here:
http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/orientation/intro-qa.html

IMHO, it is a good idea to have something like this for marketing,
especially if we want to do a "call for volunteers" in this area.

I've started a draft of this module here, taking advantage of material
that Graham and others have already put in the wiki:

http://incubator.apache.org/openofficeorg/orientation/intro-marketing.html

OK. Maybe it is more an outline than a draft ;-) But I write fast
once I have an outline. So could you take a look at let me know if
there are any other topics I should cover?

Note that this is not intended to be a comprehensive, everything you
possibly would want to know, guide to marketing. The aim is to help
new volunteers get oriented, to get a start.

Regards,

-Rob

We do have them, just not updated mainly because branding has been a mess
for the past few years. You can see many flyers, CD labels, and
presentation templates if you look for them.

The 'art' project still has many of these design elements that could be
integrated to any of the templates. There is a breakdown of the 2010
brochure we gave out at Scale. I did a minor update for Apache OpenOffice
the old design elements are still there, but I think we need to have a
'new' identity[1]. Oracle never really did any design elements aside from
the logo and iconsets. however designed backgrounds, and others are still
missing.

For the record I really like the designed that were published on the
template site by Xin Li and could be a very compatible design element. I
got to embeded them into the old Pamphlet and looks good. Proceeding with a
CD label, and flyer should be easily done.

Right. That is why it is an outline ;-)

Good point about how we're marketing the project as well as the
product. I can work that in.

For collateral I was also going to mention presentations, brochures,
CD's, etc. We don't have a current set of all of these, but it should
be our goal (IMHO) to develop or update and maintain these materials.

Hi Rob,
You left the "Collateral" part blank, your orientation modules are
excellent collateral and should be in there. One of the features of
marketing an OSS project is that while connecting with consumers is
important, connecting with volunteers is at least as important. Arguably
the most important factor of Branding is communication, these modules tick
all the right boxes.

and quietly it's also a timely kick in the pants to update our consumer
marketing collateral.

Here is an updated version :

I think it it is ready to go. But cc to Dev for their review. And to
Trademarks to see if there is anything else they would like attention
draw to in that section. (This is intended to be a 30 minute or less
orientation for new AOO marketing volunteers).
