6.0.x is now end-of-line so I have not reviewed the 6.0.x code.

The 7.0.x code is working as expected. It has been checked via a manual test
and a profiler (thanks again to YourKit) as well as by code inspection for the
issues raised in the most recent comments.

I am, therefore, marking this issue as fixed.
