[Bug 5383] compile_now() doesn't pre-load all necessary Perl modules

I'm thinking about WONTFIXing this.  there are a lot of modules we don't
necessarily _want_ to preload fully, as per comment 7.

(but if someone checks in a sufficiently resilient implementation and it seems
to work ok, I could be fine with it. ;)
