[Issue 125748] New: Pasting pictures in Calc causes Open Office crash

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=125748

          Issue ID: 125748
        Issue Type: DEFECT
Summary: Pasting pictures in Calc causes Open Office crash
           Product: Calc
           Version: 4.0.1
          Hardware: PC
                OS: Windows 7
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: major
          Priority: P3
         Component: editing
          Assignee: issues@openoffice.apache.org
          Reporter: edv-support@louis.de

Good day!

We are having the following problem:

For about two months we've been having Open Office Calc crashes whenever we try
to paste an image into Calc.
The source of the image does not matter. It can be Firefox, a Graphics Program
(Corel Draw), Lotus Notes, etc.

The biggest problem is, that we are working with Open Office on a daily basis,
and these crashes are slowing our working right down.

We have not found a solution ourselves yet, hence I am writing to you now.

I hope with your support we can make it work properly. If you need any more
information, please do not hesitate to ask.

Thank you in advance!

Alexander Baehre

You have selected version 4.0.1. The current version is 4.1, which has some
fixes in regard to picture handling. Please try, whether the problems are
solved in the current version. As workaround you can try not to use the
clipboard but save the picture first and then insert it via menu Insert.

> us.

It shows, that it is not a general problem, but something special in your
environment. It would have been best to first discuss in a forum or mailing
list, what might be different in your environment. But I will continue here;
when we find a reason in OOo, we can still open a new issue to make the issue
manageable for the developer.

Some strange behavior often has its reason in a corrupt user folder. So please
rename the folder, so that you get a virgin one on new start. The user folder
belongs to the hidden folders. You find its location in Tools > Options >
OpenOffice > Paths.

If copy&paste still fails, try it with an independent OpenOffice installation.
You can make an administrative installation with manipulating the bootstrap.ini
file (search in forum if help needed) or you can use a portable version of
OpenOffice, e.g.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/winpenpack/files/X-ApacheOpenOffice/releases/
When starting first time disable the option to use personal data from the
version 3.

We have deleted the user folder and the problem persists.

Also tried another installation of OpenOffice.

For some of our coworkers it seems to be working fine, never had any problems.
But for some it just keeps crashing for some reason.

We considered that the registry was causing some conflict between OpenOffice
and some other program, but we have several PCs with the exact same programs
installed, and on some machines OpenOffice crashes, and on some it doesn't.

We have tried the workaround, but to no avail.

No matter what way we try to add images to the document. (Does not work with
any document type, calc, writer etc)

We have also tried increasing the graphics cache, which lead to no result
either though.

on Linux-32 4.1.1.

Insert -> Picture works perfectly for me.

Copy and paste works also but only if a clear "selection" from the originating
application is made. Then "paste" works fine. However, insert from a file is
really foolproof I think.

So, question -- does the image to be pasted show up in your system clipboard
correctly? This might be the key.

Thank you for the quick reply!

Unfortunately, we have already tried updating to 4.1, which did not solve the
problem.

I will check whether the workaround works or not. But that would be but a
temporary solution.

Apparently this seems to be a more or less common problem (According to some
forums where people appear to have the same problem)

Do you have any other ideas? Cause we are running out.

Thanks in advance!

To help us to help you, please attach a sample ODS file and a picture.
We could investigate if the pasting operation crash too with your files.

The graphics cards and screen resolutions are other places where you should
look for differences between working and not working PCs.

Please ask on the dev@openoffice.apache.org mailing list, how you can get more
information about the crash. Perhaps a developer can help you then.
Unfortunately I cannot help you in that.

It is good to hear that it is working for you, but that does not really help
us.

As I have previously mentioned, copy pasting files does not work at all.
The file does show correctly in the clipboard.

Neither does the "foolproof" method work. No matter which way of pasting a
picture into the Open Office file we try, Open Office keeps crashing.
