It is unclear whether Mac Zoom is a factor in the original report.  And that
Mac Zoom demonstrates problems with other applications may be a problem with
Mac Zoom and not individual applications, such as Word for Mac 2011.  (Now one
can try Word for Mac 2016, too.)

Can anyone confirm this with OpenOffice 4.1.2 and using the default 100%
without Mac zoom?

Or is Mac zoom always a factor?
