An Excel 2003 XML file that is acceptable to Excel and OpenOffice

I conducted one additional experiment. Since I formed a .xsl sheet that did
preserve the content of Attachment 84608 and worked with OpenOffice, I used
*that* file, in Microsoft Excel 2016, to create an Excel 2003 XML file. *That*
Excel XML file opens perfectly in Apache OpenOffice.

I have attached it for the information of the original reporter. This may
reveal differences that the original reporter might wish to take into
consideration in generating files that work correctly between products.

WORKAROUND

I assume this file is being computer-generated in XML and that is why that
format is chosen rather than true .xls format.

I suggest that the file be renamed to have extension .xml (since that is even
what Microsoft Office 2013 and Excel prefer).

I further suggest that the file be opened in Excel and save as .xls as a way to
make a form that can be interchanged and also used in OpenOffice without
requiring Java and an under-used conversion.

Excel 2013 Warnings about the File

Excel 2013 detects that the file is not .xls, although it will open the file
and display the data. When I allow it to open and enable editing, I discover
that it is in Excel XML Spreadsheet format.

When opened in Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 directly, there is an "OpenOffice
requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install
..." message, presumably to attempt conversion, followed by a General
input/output error.

If I rename the file to have extension .xml, Excel 2013 opens it directly.
OpenOffice Calc will attempt to open it also, using File > Open ..., and the
JRE requirement arises again.

On Calc, this is the format "Microsoft Excel 2003 XML (.xml)(*.xml)". Without
a JRE, Calc will not save in this format either.

I happened to look at the sample file in hex.

It is *not* a .xls file. It is a Microsoft Excel 2003 XML file and that is
different. This is a special file type and the correct extension *is* .xml.

If you use the .xml extension, Microsoft Office will open it correctly without
complaint, and all of the data shows.

However, Microsoft OpenOffice Calc still opens the file with no data in the
sheet cells.

It appears that the Calc input filter for Excel 2003 XML format is failing for
your generated document.

We are not in a position to determine what the failure is and whether or not
the generated document is correct or not.

I recommend as a workaround that you open the generated document in Microsoft
Office Excel and save it as .xls from Excel if that is what you want the
recipients of the document to receive. I have done this and confirm that the
result is also readable by LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice as well as
Microsoft Office. One thing to do before saving it from Excel, though, is to
adjust the column widths of the data so the sheet appears in a pleasant form.

So these files are being generated on a server, probably from a database?

Is it important for users to be able to edit these in Excel?

Knowing more about the use case would be helpful here.

Why is it important to have these identified as .xls ? What will people be
doing with them?

You have two issues to consider. It depends on who you expect to use this file
and what you require them to have.

1. If you want users to be able to use Microsoft Excel (the reason for .xls,
yes?), your users will see warning messages in the latest versions of Microsoft
Office. Microsoft Office correctly processes the file whether you use either
.xls or .xml, but the preference is for .xml now.

2. If you want users to be able to use the file in OpenOffice, whether named
.xls or .xml, they will have to have Java installed. I don't believe this is
an option for LibreOffice and it is an extra burden on users for current
releases of Apache OpenOffice.

It is about who you are serving and how you want to demonstrate care for them.

Have you considered saving it from OpenOffice as a PDF?

Please attach the file. There is no general problem with .xls files, therefore
it is surely something special with that file.

Thanks,
Now i have changed the logic of generating excel via asp.net, So i jus opend
this file in openoffice and whn i try to click saveas i see that the file
extension shows .xml (i.e. microsoft excel 2003 XML) because of which i have to
choose option called "Microsoft excel 97 - 2003 Workbook". Is it possible to
avoid this option of showing .xml with file name and show it as .xls?
