htmlArea - inserting special characters

Has anyone located and used a plugin that allows
you to specify a custom set of special characters
that can be displayed on a button bar (that the user 
will 'click on' to select and paste into the text), such
degrees, plus-minus signs etc.?

If so, I'd appreciate the URL.
