Fwd: Open Office 4

I have the same problem but it's not going away.

In Windows 7 and OpenOffice 4.1.1.

My laptop has been shutting itself down due to overheating. I want to open
my OpenOffice files, however - I've clicked on 'open office writer' - and
it gives me the Recovery screen, but it struggles to open things and
freezes. Then I've used Task Manager, and tried to open it again, three
times now, and it's still locking up, with the white screen.

Got ideas?

I'm glad that worked for you. Be aware that after any crash, be it of OpenOffice or of the computer while OpenOffice is open, there may be such left-over processes. If, after a crash, OpenOffice does not start up, you may need to repeat the TaskManager delete of soffice processes to enable it startup. I strongly advise finding out why your computer crashes and fixing it.

I'm at the end of my day, so am fatigued. I forgot to say how to start TaskManager - use Ctrl Shift Esc.

If your laptop has been shutting down unexpectedly there are possibly left-over OpenOffice processes running; these can remain even after a computer restart. So start up TaskManager and kill any soffice (note: soffice, with a leading 's')
processes shown as running on TaskManager's Processes tab.

Then, because the OpenOffice user profile may be damaged, continue by deleting or renaming your OpenOffice User profile. As you are using Windows do this by:
Close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder. Start OpenOffice.

Jim,

Thanks a lot! I have a cooler under the laptop, but it's not very
effective. I'll probably build one using real case fans and some wood. HP
also gives directions for cleaning the fans and remounting the cooler.
Would be nice to have a backup computer first.

In the meantime, I tried downloading Apache Open Office 4.1.2, from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/?source=typ_redirect

It has failed to download twice. I speak English, didn't bother with the
language packs, just clicked download. Must be my lucky day/bad internet?

Though nothing to do with the software issues, which are probably the
resuly of a too fast shutdown of the machine before buffers can write to
the hard drive, you might want to look into an "iron lung" for the laptop.
A base about yhe size of the laptop base, runs 2, 3, 4, 6 fans, powers
through a USB port, and cools the laptop somewhat effectively. Make sure
that you avoid the overheating process, as it can eventually damage
hardware.

I hope that Brian or Rory or Dennis or one of the other very experienced
users will chime in here soon to offer suggestions as to the software
issues,
