Velocity : How to ... ?

Hello,

I used Velocity in the current cvs.
I know jsp and I code with it correctly, but I didn't know Velocity.

So I read the user-guide about Velocity :
http://jakarta.apache.org/velocity/user-guide.html

But I miss things:
I don't understand where (in top.vm by example) objects ($data, $link
etc ... ) are declare and define.
I would like to know how I can import classes and create objects in a
Velocity file.
