Timing of first beta release

Is there a target date for the first beta release? I'm concerned that AXIS
isn't being given the attention it deserves from developers because it is
still considered alpha. I wouldn't propose moving to beta if the core
contributors don't feel it's ready, but it seems pretty feature rich to me
now to be labeled as alpha.
