Subject: two brief notes on config stuff ---

Since mail from MIT to the list seems to have been delayed, two brief
notes sent from hyperreal (I assume the originals will arrive in due
course, but what the heck):

1) I believe that the ability to use old NCSA config files is one of our
main selling points, and is one which will gain in value, rather than
losing, if NCSA themselves lose this ability by making incompatible
changes. I'm not opposed to upward compatible changes (in fact, there
already are a few in the current code which no one has noticed, which
are discussed in my original mail), but I would be strongly opposed to
   breaking compatibility completely.

2) Many of the ideas in Richards' proposal --- specificalyly a nested set
of defaults per real server, virtual server, and directory for those things
which it makes sense to set per directory, are already in the current
config structure. When discussing changes to that structure, it would
be helpful to say how they relate to the current code.
