[users@httpd] 2 problems - NamedVirtualHosts and Posts already in use

Standard RedHat 8.0 server install. After editing the
httpd.conf file to add my personal setting for ServerName,
ServerAdmin, NameVirtualHost. After saving and restarting
Apache I get these errors:

[root@ginger conf]# apachectl start
[Fri Jan 10 11:05:30 2003] [error] VirtualHost
172.20.3.4:80 -- mixing * ports a
nd non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not
supported, proceeding with
undefined results
[Fri Jan 10 11:05:30 2003] [error] VirtualHost
172.20.3.4:80 -- mixing * ports a
nd non-* ports with a NameVirtualHost address is not
supported, proceeding with
undefined results
(98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to
address 172.20.3.4:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down

Here is a copy of my httpd.conf file:
Listen 80

ServerAdmin webmaster@signalblast.com
ServerName www.signalblast.com

NameVirtualHost 172.20.3.4
<VirtualHost 172.20.3.4>
	ServerName www.signalblast.com
	ServerAdmin webmaster@signalblast.com
	DocumentRoot "/var/www/html"
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost 172.20.3.4:80>
	ServerName www.test.com
	ServerAdmin webmaster@signalblast.com
	DocumentRoot "/var/virtualdomains/test"
</VirtualHost>

I can make the "(98)Address already in use: make_sock:
could not bind to address 172.20.3.4:80
no listening sockets available, shutting down" error go
away by commenting out the 'Listen' directive, but
everything I have read tells me I need to have that
directive.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Wes Hegge

Look your log carefully:

I do not mix port and no port specified VirtualHosts

try:

<VirtualHost 172.20.3.4:>
      ServerName www.test.com
      ServerAdmin webmaster@signalblast.com
      DocumentRoot "/var/virtualdomains/test"
</VirtualHost>

since you are already specifying the port with the listen directive,
this is trying to set a second instance of apache to same port.

Yeah, I only read a little bit of the note. If I had read further I
would have caught that. I am swamped today. BTW: When you have ssl
running, that recommended config causes problems with the stock ssl
config and you need to go to an IP based config anyway. That is why I
always tell people to go to IP based anyway.

I have no idea why you say that.

1. The "*" configuration is the recommended configuration unless you are
doing complex mixing of name and ip/port based vhosts. It is much easier
to use and less prone to error.

2. This person is not even using the "*" form, so asking them to change it
isn't going to help.

Change your NameVirtualHost * to NameVirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where
xxx.xxx... is your ip)
Then change each <VirtualHost *> to <VirtualHost xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx> (where
xxx.xxx... is your ip)
and this will solve the problem.

Nothing is running on that port. When I do an 'nmap' or
'netstat', without starting Apache, there is nothing
listening on port 80.

If I change
    Listen 80
to
    Listen 81
then run nmap I get something on ports 80 and 81.

As a test I commented out the Listen directive and then
started Apache. Apache started without any errors. I
then attempted to goto www.signalblast.com, I get the
standard Apache test page. I try www.test.com, I get
nothing.

You are trying to "Listen" to an address that already has a web server
attached to it. Are there any other web servers running on the box? What
happens if you try to connect to that address when apache isn't running?

This is off the top of my head, so consider the source.
Joshua's suggestion is a valid possiblility, and others have
sugguested methods of checking this. But one thing I would do when
setting the Listen directive is to specify the IP address rather
then the port. We use multiple IP-based virtual hosts due to our
need for SSL access on these sites. Hence, our Listen directives
specify the IP address and port. Where it appears you are using
Name-based virtual hosts, you should do fine just specifying the
IP address in the Listen directive, not using the port at all.

  YMMV.

Or you could (as root) do a 'netstat -anp | grep LISTEN' and have it take
1/100th the time. :-)

Hello,

Simply do one thing execute these :

To Scan All Ports
nmap -sT -sU -p 1-65535 localhost

Check what service is running on port 98

Status with PID's u can Kill them.
netstat -punta

last is u can use
lsof -i proto:port

this will give u the pid of the process running on 98 port.
Kill -9 <pid>.

This should solve ur problem.
(u may have to install lsof its not a default with Linux)

Regards
Sys.

I use this:
Listen *:80

And every VirtualHost has no port specified, 'cause i want all of my

Re: [users@httpd] 2 problems - NamedVirtualHosts and Posts already in use

Posted by Wes Hegge <wh...@charter.net>.
Changing the <VirtualHost 172.20.3.4:80> to <VirtualHost
172.20.3.4> worked, thought I tried that yesterday though.

But I still have the [98] error. I can get rid of that
error by commenting out the Listen directive but through
all the reading I have done, everything either has the
Listen directive in the config or tells me I have to have
it. So what is up with that?

Thanks again for all the help!

Try changing this to <VirtualHost 172.20.3.4>. The error message
indicates the port specification on this host is causing confusion.

Your NameServer close might ressemble this then:
255.255.255.255:80 or whatever just remove the port in the NameServer
clause....
