Large svn import: Could not open the requested SVN filesystem
Hi, I'm experiencing problems with importing a directory into svn. The
repository seems to be working fine, but I have recently required to add a
vendor branch for some upstream code to the repository. Following the vendor
branch instructions from the book I did a svn import to load the third party
code.
I get around 200:
A dirname/file
then:
svn:
Could not open the requested SVN filesystem
And it grinds to a halt. Any ideas what could be causing this? I'm working on
getting the server side logs but I'm not sure when I will have those.

The solution was decreasing the Apache 2 MaxClients directive (from 150 to
50).

I don't know. I wouldn't have thought MaxClients would have anything
to do with it, but I don't really understand why the locks aren't
being released in the first place :-(.

Thanks! Is the problem then that large numbers of Apache threads use a number
of locks each and then exhaust the total available locks? If so, is it
possible to calculate an appropriate number of locks/threads so you can
guarantee this will not happen?

I added this FAQ item:
http://subversion.tigris.org/faq.html#bdb-cannot-allocate-memory
Your solution of decreasing MaxClients seems like a workaround (though
I'm glad it worked). The above FAQ also gives a workaround, but a
different and perhaps more permanent one.

The subversion server is getting out of memory, from the apache logs:
[Tue Apr 12 11:32:56 2005] [error] [client 62.x.x.x] (20014)Error string no
t specified yet: Berkeley DB error while opening 'representations' table for
fil
esystem /data/projects/sanctuary/subversion/db:\nCannot allocate memory
At the time I had around 5Mb of physical and 300Mb of virtual memory free and
memory use is stable so I can see no reason why an allocation should fail.
The Berkeley DB version is 4.2.52.
I would really appreciate any help anyone could give me with this issue.
