We don't have canonical guidelines apart from trying to follow the Sun Java coding conventions and generally trying to do the right thing. The rules in Sonar are good guidelines but not something that I'd follow religiously.

PS. Note that the Sonar report flags quite a few of the ICU4J classes that we've copied to org.apache.tika.parser.txt. It's probably best if we don't touch this code too much to avoid diverging from the upstream project.

Thank you for the feedback. I'll try to create some patches this week and attach them to this issue.

I would like to help out with some of these issues. I wonder if the tika project team of lucene team have a checkstyle or coding guide for writing code. Is your Sonar instance already taking this into account or is there a resource out there available where I can read this?
