test patches for release 1.0.2

per a patch from manoj, i have some updates to the unit tests which
make the unit tests more stable on linux. many of the unit tests
create listening sockets and then bang on them. linux seems to
have more problems with reusing a port number which has been
used in another test, which causes the tests to fail when run as
a group but to succeed individually. any objection with committing
these?
