The only reason I think there might have been a syncronized
block here is if the sleep() were to changed to a wait()
by doing this:

            long  sleeptime = _timeBetweenEvictionRunsMillis;
            while(!_cancelled) {
               synchronized(GenericObjectPool.this) {
                   try {
                      wait(sleeptime);
                   } catch(Exception e) {
                    ; // ignored
                   }
                }
                cursor = doEviction(cursor);
            }
