Feedback about the sgi patches issue.

Some more voices from the larger community.

Below are six messages posted to new-httpd over the last few
days.  Ezmlm is configured to divert postings from non-subscribers
to the moderator, that's currently me.  I have replied to all
of these.

Well I would just like to point out my disappointment(and that of the
company I am working for)
for you decision to NOT include officially the patches made public by
SGI in future
apache releases.
As performance is more important than portability to us, we will
probably have to switch
web server because of this.

Dear Sir/Madam/Co-Developers,

It is sad to hear SGI had to abandon it's support for their speed
improvement patches for Apache. Mike (the developer at SGI who has a
great history on the part of webserver programming, see
http://reality.sgi.com/mja/resume.html to check it out yourself) claims
this is because of the lack of support from the Apache Software
Foundation.

It is of course up to the Apache Software Foundation to decide not to
include contributed code, but in this case it think you're letting a
pretty good opportunity slip away to get apache's benchmark higher.

I hope you realize there are people out there who do appreciate the
contributions by SGI, and maybe this message will help you to convince
yourself to include the patches after all.

Due to the Apache Software Foundation's disinterest in adopting any
substantive parts of the work
                             presented here, SGI has decided that I
should no longer actively contribute to this project or to the
                             Apache HTTP server project. I will continue
to port the patches to new versions of Apache/1.3 (but not
                             2.0) in my spare time and to accept bug
fixes and enhancements contributed by folks like you. I'm glad
                             that many people found my work useful and
I'm sorry to see it end this way.
