Spindle 3.0.13 available
Actually pushed the release out before sending mail this time!
Includes first cut of an outline view for the specification editor. Doesn't
do much, but it does update itself as you type.

I guess release 13 was doomed to fail...
Its busted, I'm removing it from the update site.

Yep, the only relationship Spindle has to the output folder is to ignore it
and anything in it.

I don't think Spindle requires the build output to be under
WEB-INF/classes. Certainly mine is not set there, I use
/target/modules/exp-war
for the exploded web-app, and that's produced only by my ant build
script, not Eclipse.
Spindle just knows about the sorce for the context, which I keep at
/src/web
I don't think it needs build output at all, nor does it produce anything
itself during the build stage...
All seems to work ok, as per my previous message.

Hmm...I do my builds in a similar fashion, but my "official" deployment
builds are created via ant script, and the compiled output from eclipse
is ignored anyway. (makes for nice tool independence among multiple
developers that way too) But, it would be nice if Spindle were able to
work with more "complex" code layouts as well...

Spindle doen't care where the build output folder is with the following
caveat: Spindle ignores anything in or under the build output folder. The
only reason the default output folder is in WEB-INF/classes is because
people asked for it.
Thanks for adding a bug w/regards to the NPE. I hope you'll attach a log
file and I'll probably be able to fix the problem today.

After being set straight (thanks Jason), I finally got Spindle installed
on 3.0M4 and - almost - have had zero problems. All the fun I was having
with Tapestry in a plain editor is eclipsed *ahem* by using Spindle. The
'almost' is with Spindle requiring my build output being under
WEB-INF/classes...(I'm asuming this was the problem anyway as it
appeared to be the only difference in the 'default' configuration) I
specified an existing project as a Tapestry project and just watched the
builds loop (5, sometimes 6 times) before getting an NPE from the
Spindle builder. Refusing to move my build path (as I assemble my wars
from a single set of classes but multiple sets of web (context) pages),
I then started a New -> Project -> Tapestry project and worked with it a
bit using the same files, but the default structure for Spindle, and it
works like a charm. So, for my "just Tapestry" project, I'd go for the
upgrade. (And prior to today I was contemplating downgrading Eclipse on
another machine just to try out Spindle)

Stupid me, I didn't bother trying any of the new releases since as far
as I knew they were still 2.1.x only.
It works fine for me as well, with 3.0M4. Sweet! I have no issues at
all as far as I can tell, with no errors showing up in Eclipse's Error
Log view.
I encountered only one little quirk. For some reason, .jwc files, but
not .page files, besides having the 'Tapestry Spec Editor' associated
with them, as default, which works fine, also have 'New Tapestry Spec
Editor' associated. If I select that instead, I do get an exception. I'm
not sure where this 'new' editor came from, maybe it is from some older
code that is still around, since this is basically a
ClassNotFoundException. Of course I can just remove the association, or
not use it. The exception is as follows:
Error Nov 04, 2003 17:50:52.85 Problems occurred when invoking code from

I, being extremely hard-headed, have ignored all statements that said that Spindle 3 wouldn't work with Eclipse 3. The problem with Eclipse 3 is that the Eclipse team has made api changes
that are not backwards compatible with 2.1.x. So far the only
incompatibility hit prevents me from building Spindle in Eclipse 3 without
breaking the plugin in 2.1.x
In summary:
If I build in 2.1.x it might work in 3.0
If I build in 3.0 the plugin won't run in Eclipse 2.1.x
Some people have reported that the Spindle builds for 2.1.x work in 3.0 and
thats great news. But if it breaks in 3.0 and the solution is to build in
3.0 I'm stuck.

I've been watching the Spindle versions roll out... watching the bugs
fixed... and waiting. I've seen one or two people indicate they've
gotten Spindle to work with Eclipse 3.0 and that's exactly what I'm
waiting on. Of the people who have gotten it to work with 3.0, are there
any "hack instructions" (read: not supported, recommended, documented,
etc) to get it working? The statement "...can't personally imagine
developing Tapestry apps without it." kinda got me... since I've really
enjoyed Tapestry even with it being 100% manual inside my Eclipse
session. On a side note... any possible timeframe for a "formal" or at
least "formally informal" version of Spindle for 3.X?

Testimonial: Spindle 3.0.x, as it is, is a tremendous time saver and
can't personally imagine developing Tapestry apps without it. With the
new features that are coming it will easily move from "tremendous time
saver" to "completely invaluable". Please keep Spindle'ing!

Spindle 3.0.15 available
Posted by Geoff Longman <gl...@intelligentworks.com>.
Fixed some deep internal bugs that users would rarely see. Changed the spec
outline view in some minor ways (double click selects editor text, selection
tracks the cursor). Added hover help for component types and parameter names
in the Spec Editor.
Plus, a few people have mentioned that Spindle is getting better as the
alphas have rolled out. I hope that its useful even now (lots more to
build). I'm lucky enough to work on this on the company's dime but I've
already gone past the time origionally allotted. I think that if I get some
more positive feedback it would be easier to weasel more time when the
inevitable "didn't you say 2 weeks?" question arises.
Hey Howard. When are you going to try it out?
