1.3.1...
(I have a sore wrist making it hard to type, so I haven't done much today)
there are a few win32 issues I have to clear up, but after that I would
suggest that rolling the 1.3.1 tarball is pretty close, either tonight or
tomorrow morning.
Any objections?
Please test the current source.

Is it really that hard to do all this from a batch program? And a small C
program which prompts for install parameters, basically setting up the
command-line args for the batch program?

Yeah, getting into the InstallShield blackmail scheme sucks.
For the PHP project we use a tiny little installer. It isn't free, but it
only costs $29. See http://www.user.xpoint.at/r.fellner/DL_Inf.htm
It does everything we need. Not that we need much. A couple of registry
entries, ask the user for an installation directory and have it copy the
files there. It does this nicely.

Umm, maybe, but I'm not sure I like using IS5. You tend to have to write
IS5 install scripts with will lock you into the product. Since it is an
awful piece of software, I'd prefer to keep Apache as neutral as possible.
With IS2 we are doing that by making the configuration process a DLL. Most
other installers can launch DLL's, so we can easily change when we find a
less evil product. I really wish someone would write a good freeware Win32
installer. Having to use commercial products like this in Apache doesn't
give me a very good feeling.

We have IS5 figured out.
We are ready to give to you a working install package based on IS5.1
in a Package for the Web executable. We'll naturally give the source
back as well, and we can help with any questions you have.
If you think that this is valuable, I think I can get a commitment
that IBM will handle building Win32 install packages for future
versions and as needed, so you won't have to worry about this stuff
anymore.
BTW, according to the Windows experts around here, NT 5, whenever it
shows up, will completely change the installation process. Our guess
is that it will be difficult or impossible to update an IS2 package
to support this while IS5 should be much easier.

But we really don't care about that, since we have an IS5 license from
installshield.

But we do care about that. It is just a pile of crap.

I believe the free version can't be used for a distributable install.
And we gave up on IS5 coz it drove us all crazy.

The correct solution for IS5 is to use PackageForTheWeb. But forget IS5:
been there, done that, don't want to do it again.
Cheers,
Ben.

We been able to build a Win32 install image using Install Shield 5.0 (IS 5.0 comes free with VC++
5.0) from an apache-1.3 tree rooted anywhere on the build machine (ie, not restricted to building
from a tree rooted at c:\apache).
Our current implementation assumes the directory
x:\where\ever\you\have\apache\src\os\win32\installer as the base for the InstallShield 5.0 files. We
can probably use WinZip to create a self extracting .exe file. Should have something available
tomorrow for the group to review... Just wanted to let you know we were working on it.

Your ancestors weren't programmers, who let you in the guild?
The Pascarelli book so is useful. It gives you a good sense of how rich
the RSI problem space is so you don't rush past the diagnosis and
on your way to a treatment. - ben

Yabbut.. CTS susceptibility can have an hereditary element. It
definitely runs in my family (it hardly slows to a trot!). I had
the outpatient surgery a couple of years ago on my right wrist and
everything's been grand since. Before, my hand was going numb at
least 5 minutes out of every hour. (I was fortunate that it hadn't
progressed to the painful stage.)
Of course, I did myself the service of looking up details of the
procedure on the Web after scheduling it. I found a treatise
with 16 full-colour graphically detailed photographs showing me
*exactly* what I was asking them to do to me. !!!!

Rest never resolves the problem, but it may eliminate the inflamation
which is good. The bent over 60 year old rice farmer is the a good
model for the problem. ... but ... this is not the forum for this

Yup. I just tried updating again, and it said:
U include/ap_config.h
cvs update: move away include/ap_config.h; it is in the way
I did that and now it works.
Sorry to bother you. :^)

Erm... what sort of linux system is this?
Is this the most recent from-cvs snapshot?
