Amazon Corretto

Hi all,

Just announced at Devoxx in Belgium:

https://twitter.com/search?q=amazon+corretto

- Downstream distribution of the Open JDK.
- No-cost long-term support.
- At least quarterly releases.
- Drop-in replacement.
- Multiplatform - Linux, Windows, Mac, Docker

And it appears to be driven by James Gosling, founder of Java, and probably
the most famous NetBeans enthusiast.

I believe we should consider orientating ourselves around Amazon Corretto.

Re: Amazon Corretto

An interesting point: in addition to bundling the newest version of
VisualVM as part of GraalVM, OracleLabs also provides a branded version of
NetBeans called IGV, which is customized for the needs of GraalVM language
developers and power users. IGV is as part of the GraalVM EE download.

Take a look at graalvm.org, especially graalvm.org/downloads.

The IGV workflow is more analysis oriented, than development oriented, but
the editing features are there. IGV benefits from NetBeans support of Java
and dynamic languages. NetBeans benefits from OracleLabs interest in
bringing the dynamic language compilation and tooling to unprecedented
levels.

In short: GraalVM EE already bundles Apache NetBeans tailored for the needs
of OracleLabs.

Re: Amazon Corretto

Posted by Geertjan Wielenga <ge...@googlemail.com.INVALID>.
It's a tough situation -- and ideally Apache NetBeans would be bundled with
one or more of the OpenJDK distributions, though maybe that's not something
for us to decide, but it should be a need that one or more OpenJDK
distributions should feel -- the need to provide free and open source tools
together with free and open source JDK distributions.

In any case, when any of them come knocking, there should not be a problem
for us to be available, i.e., so long as their distribution of Apache
NetBeans is not named Apache NetBeans, i.e., AdoptNetBeans, a distribution
of Apache NetBeans bundled with AdoptOpenJDK, CorrettoNetBeans, a
distribution of Apache NetBeans bundled with Amazon Corretto. Etc. Each
would come with a couple of plugins providing features specific to the JDK
that it is bundled with, etc.

I think that's a logical consequence, if we continue to get our act
together, with thanks to the many individual contributors (Laszlo. Chris,
Neil, Antonio, Emilian, Junichi, Matthias, Sven, Thilina, Eric -- to name
the tip of the iceberg/layered cake).

Not too impressed by Amazon Correto. So far they only provide .msi, .rpm,
etc, with no .zip/.tgz in sight. If you look at their .msi it doesn't
actually seem to be doing anything else than unpacking. Doesn't even set
PATH. Then why distribute as an .msi ?

I'm waiting for someone to provide JDK as a .tgz/.zip bundle as it used to
be the case (AdoptOpenJDK has got this right), preferably to be exposed in
such a way so it can be fetched automatically by a build farm without
requiring popup accept of license. Heck, I hope someone will publish JDK
into a Maven repo some day so that the whole bundling idea can finally be
realized without hazzle.

I'm hoping that distributing self-contained NetBeans Platform applications
would become easier in the future. Amazon Corretto doesn't help in this
respect. But yes, great to see diversity and Amazon's initiative is for
sure a testament to the JDK's omnipresence.

Hi,

Since NetBeans is a community based project I would argue that if you’re going to center around any build of OpenJDK that it be the London Java Communities build, AdoptOpenJDK. It is the only truly community supported build.

Amazon’s support is superficial at best. It is driven by Amazon’s commercial needs, nothing wrong with that.. it’s just lets try to understand what they are doing.
1) Amazon built an internal JVM team to; be responsive to Amazon’s needs and to avoid Oracle support licenses…
2) Once built, it’s no real expense to make their internal builds public and in the process, interfere with Oracles plans to sell more support contracts for Java.

So I don’t believe that Amazon’s motives are altruistic here… Adopt is an community run project so…..

Kind regards,
Kirk

I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion? In both cases, at
minimum the terms of both licenses apply?!

Well an openjdk distribution can include NetBeans as ASL 2.0 doesn't forbid
this.
The other way around is not possible though.

I still think you're misinterpreting this issue. It don't believe it
has anything to do with Oracle legal, or in what circumstances code
under those two licenses can be bundled together, but specifically
Apache foundation policies on what can and can't be distributed by the
foundation - eg. https://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html#criteria.
I would hope that policy around "platform dependencies" (eg.
https://www.apache.org/legal/resolved.html#platform ) will evolve or
things are going to get more complicated for us.

Neil

at this time it is not possible for the Apache Netbeans project. For an
apache project this needed to be resolved:

https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/LEGAL-336

To make this possible, I think Oracle legal (as the holder of the
copyright of openjdk) and Apache legal need to agree on what is an "ok"
combination of GPLv2-CPE (GPL with Classpath Exception) and the ALv2.

Most people agree, that a license/artifact under GPLv2-CPE used as a
part of a larger does not affect the license of the whole artifact. The
problem is, that Apache legal sees this more critical.

Greetings

Matthias

Would it be possible to provide Net Beans binary distribution together as
Corretto, as it was before with Oracle JDK?
With Gosling there , he is probably using NetBeans and he may be willing to
support that.
