Nbr. of processes on Linux

Hello all

We have the following configuration:

JDK : 1.3.1_04
Linux Debian 3

and tried James ( 2.0a3 ) : ( 2.1a1-2002-08-18 ) : ( 2.1a1-2002-09-24 )

After one or two days (...at the very best) running James, it just kills our Linux with 1000-2000 processes running.
I have seen at least one other message on the list that reports the same problem but no solution so far.

Our current workaround is to restart James every morning....weekends included of course!
This is really frustrating.
Hope this can be fixed soon otherwise we will have to change our email solution :o(

Hello Mike

We have currently 3 users only!
May be a platform bug (i.e. I haven't seen anything like this reported for
a windows installation.)

I'm also curious, I've had installations of James from 1.2.1 to the current
HEAD of cvs, and I've always had uptimes of a week or so.
But I've used Red Hat, and am now on Sun's 1.4.1 JDK.

Are you using database or file system?

Im of no use in solving your problem :) but I am curious how many people
you have using James?

Just curious of its scalability. Are these processes created by several
users or many?

RedHat 6.2 (upgrading soon either to 7.3 or 8.0, both of which are 2.4.18
kernel)
MySQL 3.23.42 (we'll upgrade when we move to the updated libc)
Sun JDK 1.3.0 (Are you running SMP?  Sun 1.4x JVM has reported SMP problems;
the fix is IBM JVM)
James 2.1-CVS
Phoenix 4.0beta

We are using use the file system for the spam and error stores, and the
outgoing spool (I'll probably switch this one). The primary spool
(incoming) and inboxes are managed through the database.

I have 39 processes after a clean restart and after long periods of
operation.

If I do the command:

ps aux | grep james

I have a list of 94 processes.
Right after a restart:
I have a list of 32 processes.

It is running on Phoenix 4.0beta

Note that when I spotted the problem on this list the configuration was:
James 2.0a3
Jdk1.4.0_01
mysql 3.23.51
RedHat 7.3

We are using the filesystem.

Thanxs

I'm currently running James 2.1-CVS on

Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.0)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.3.0, mixed mode)

and it runs for long periods without a problem. ps -auxwww | grep james |
wc -l currently shows 39 processes. How many do you see? It would be good
to know why you are seeing something other. What version of Phoenix do you
have installed?

Meanwhile, as a workaround you could put in a crontab task to restart james,
rather than do it manually.
