   Overall, I think the design is good as long as the SMT has the same behavior with existing configurations. But I'll review the KIP and provide feedback on the KIP discussion thread.
   
   BTW, one of the benefits of Connect SMTs is that you can develop your own implementations, package them as a custom plugin, and use them in your own Connect installations.
