updated and fix a few warnings.  Note that this won't pass test-patch without having HADOOP-7872.  There were some remaining warnings but those existing without my changes when I run test-patch with a simple text change.

    -1 javadoc.  The javadoc tool appears to have generated 7 warning messages.
    -1 findbugs.  The patch appears to introduce 19 new Findbugs (version 1.3.9) warnings.
