This would be a great addition to our (inadequate) developer documentation!

Probably the best place to put this is the hadoop wiki, as its more open to updating by anyone with permissions, with changes shipping immediately. Create an account on [[https://wiki.apache.org/hadoop/]], let us know the username and we'll give you the rights to add the document
