[BUG] --with-ssl causes update to fail

Using svn compiled with the following options:
./configure --enable-maintainer-more --prefix=/opt/svn \
            --with-apxs=/opt/httpd/bin/apxs --with-ssl=/opt/ssl

Gives me an error when I update. (I checked out without the
--with-ssl option).

striker:~/src/svn/svn$ svn update

svn_error: #21067 : <Bad URL passed to RA layer>
  Unrecognized URL scheme: http://svn.collab.net/repos/svn/.

When I do a recompile and leave the --with-ssl option off,
the update works fine.

I'm not really familiar with neons and subversions build system internals
(yet), but it seems that neon isn't setting LIBS = -lssl in
neon/src/Makefile.
After manually adding this, recompiling and installing I now have
svn with shared libs and ssl capability :)

On to setting up the server side and do some testing ;)
I'll get back to you later.

RE: [BUG] --with-ssl causes update to fail

Posted by Sander Striker <st...@apache.org>.
Hi,

Ok, this time I tried the shared build and the
resulting 'svn' fails.

I'm using a fresh checkout of svn. With bundled
db3. And Joes earlier patch to find out what the
problem is.

$ ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure --prefix=/opt/svn-ssl --enable-maintainer-mode \
  --with-ssl=/opt/ssl

# make install

$ /opt/svn-ssl/bin/svn --version
Subversion, version M3  (client)
   compiled Sep  8 2001, 11:57:07

Copyright (C) 2000-2001 CollabNet.
Subversion is open source software, see http://subversion.tigris.org/

The following repository access (RA) modules are available:

apr_error: #20019, src_err 0 : <DSO load failed>
  Could not load DSO `libsvn_ra_dav.so': /opt/svn-ssl/lib/libneon.so.15:
undefined symbol: SSL_set_fd

And thus it seems that something didn't get linked properly in
shared build with ssl.

About the earlier problem that went away when using a fresh
install directory. My bad, I should read better:
 "3. Clean up any previous Subversion installs first!"
in the INSTALL file.

Same here, bundled db3 build that is.

Right, I think I found what the problem is. I retried it and
then decided to pick a new installation directory (one that didn't
exist before) like so:

$ ./configure --disable-shared --prefix=/opt/svn-static \
  --enable-maintainer-mode --with-ssl=/opt/ssl
$ make

# make install

$ /opt/svn-static/bin/svn --version
Subversion, version M3  (client)
   compiled Sep  8 2001, 11:34:54

Copyright (C) 2000-2001 CollabNet.
Subversion is open source software, see http://subversion.tigris.org/

The following repository access (RA) modules are available:

* ra_dav : handles 'http' schema
 (Module for accessing a repository via WebDAV (DeltaV) protocol.)
* ra_local : handles 'file' schema
 (Module for accessing a repository on local disk.)
* ra_dav : handles 'https' schema
 (Module for accessing a repository via WebDAV (DeltaV) protocol.)

$ /opt/svn-static/bin/svn update [my current directory is a checked out
copy of svn]
$

Now this works, I'll go and try the shared build, after first removing
the installation directory...

Well I just tried this, using this configure line (and bundled DB3
build, but otherwise normal)

./configure --disable-shared --with-ssl --enable-maintainer-mode

and then doing

./subversion/clients/cmdline/svn co https://localhost/

works (in that it doesn't complain about unrecognized URL scheme).

Yeah, don't worry, the current code copes with the DB/without-DB
situation properly in shared and non-shared builds. But it relies on the
fact that any errors loading the DSO are ignored, e.g. when the DSO
isn't actually there. This isn't helpful when trying to work out why a
DSO which *is* there doesn't actually load!

My patch changed that to get the error out for debugging.

(Sadly it doesn't look like we can portably distinguish between a "DSO
not present" and a "couldn't load DSO" error.)

I wouldn't know, I use db in the subversion tree, because I couldn't
get --with-db=/path/of/my/db/install to work for me.

> Is there something more?

I have a shared svn binary with ssl working now. After doing

$ ./configure --enable-maintainer-mode --prefix=/opt/svn \
  --with-apxs=/opt/httpd/bin/apxs --with-ssl=/opt/ssl

I did:

$ mv neon/Makefile neon/Makefile~
$ sed -e 's/LIBS = /LIBS = -lssl/' neon/Makefile~ >neon/Makefile

Then it works ok. Surely this needs to get fixed somewhere...

The reason it was failing before is because an SSL function couldn't
be found which was in neon.

That shouldn't be true. Without DB, the SVN_LIBSVN_CLIENT_LINKS_RA_LOCAL
symbol should not be set.

Is there something more?

If you're not building a with-DB3 build you will have to #if 0 the
ra_local_init definition in ra_libraries to get a useful binary with

Hum. That looks heathly, but your debugging seems to contract this; is
that really the same binary being traced?

initfunc should be initially NULL if you build shared since the modules
aren't linked in; if it's NULL, ra_loader.c then tries to load them as
DSOs. But silently drops the error if that fails... (usually a bad
idea)

But if it fails, I'm not how you got the output above ;) Since you only
get the output above if you managed to link or load the initfunc!

Can you try this patch?

Re: [SVN-DEV] [PATCH]: support for configure --program-prefix/suffix option

Hi Scott,

yes, actually I have seen your patch AFTER I have submitted mine ;-)

While I did not test every target in the Makefile, I think it should
work. In the gen-make there's the Target class defined and it should be
used everywhere. If I change the tfile attribute, it should work
everywhere.

Besides whatever problem we have with case insensitiv filesystems, the
--program-prefix/suffix options should be supported anyhow (or removed
from the configure script).

I believe that more changes to gen-make are needed to properly support
these options for all the various rules. (program name is mentioned in
clean rules and install rules as well as the make rules, for example).

The patch I submitted a few days ago to support a 'pre-install' suffix
accomplishes most of the same purposes as this patch, I think.

[PATCH]: support for configure --program-prefix/suffix option

Posted by Dominik Westner <li...@logicunited.com>.
HI all,

here is a little patch to support configure's --program-prefix/suffix
options.

I tested it on a freshly checked out version of svn (v.72). The patch
was created with svn diff.
I hope someone can integrate it into the repository.

Greetings

Dominik

Nah, it was a user bug. I should have cleaned out the installation
directory. After I did that I got both shared and static builds
working with little effort. Only shared with ssl needs a minor tweak.

$ /opt/svn-ssl/bin/svn --version
Subversion, version M3  (client)

I tried building with --disable-shared and without it. Doesn't
make a difference here (I think --disable-shared is broken, it
seems to build shared anyway).

When I gdb, it can be traced back to ra_dav not having an init
function, which strikes me as odd. IOW, the only match that is
trying to be performed is against 'file'.

I can't figure out why initfunc stays NULL other than the library not being
found.
But, if that is the case, why is it able to find the ra_local lib?
Suggestions
appreciated.

What does "svn --version" give?

ISTR --with-ssl had a problem when shared builds were enabled, can't
remember what the issue was though.
