source code line numbers and use of appenders for j2ee

Hi,

I'm looking for answers to two questions from this board:

1. For a pattern layout of (%F:%L), the logging output gives (?:?).
How would i get the source and line numbers? Probably not log4j
related.

2. For those using log4j in large J2ee deployments, how are you using
appenders?
For example, in Ceki's older documentation, it states that for J2EE
environments, JMSAppenders and SocketAppeders are the best choices.
If so, do all J2EE apps talk directly to the TopicAppender *only* and a
listener on that topic would then delegate those logging events to multiple
other Appenders (DB, RollingFile)?

Thanks!

David
